Welcome
The Reading Knee Unit was established by Sean O'Leary in 2009 with a clear aim to allow patients access to appropriately skilled consultants to discuss and understand their knee condition. This process should include relevant information on your condition, surgery by appropriately skilled consultants and information regarding the potential outcomes of that procedure.
Spire Dunedin Hospital offers on site x-ray, MRI, physiotherapy, gait analysis / Orthotics services to accomodate rapid diagnosis and early intervention where required for all acute sporting injuries.
The types of procedures available include all aspects of:
Arthroscopic knee surgery, including meniscal repair and microfracture
Ligament reconstruction (ACL/PCL/MCL/PLC)
Patella stabilisation procedures
Realignment procedures (Osteotomy)
Minimally invasive, Unicompartmental and Total Knee Replacements
This website will allow you to look up information regarding specific procedures, send specific enquiries to the unit and enable your GP to refer by fax for an appointment.
If you require any further information please read the Patient Information page and if you wish to proceed further or have any queries please click on the 'Enquiries / Contact' tab at the top of the page or the 'Contact Us' tab in the quick links.
Alternatively you can call us via the number at the top of the page. (Private appointments only)

Important Notice regarding BUPA Insured patients
On the 2nd April we received a letter from BUPA (dated 29/03/12) notifying us of their intention to significantly re-classify surgery procedure codes. This update takes effect on all procedures performed 23/04/12 onwards and may result in a (significant) reduction in the amount they will reimburse towards the surgical fee. This will result in an increased excess which will be payable by the patient. Currently they are the only insurer to have made such a change.
If you have already obtained pre-authorisation for a surgical procedure that will take place after the 23rd April we would advise you to contact BUPA to confirm whether they will honour the originally agreed estimate costs.
We regret the impact of these changes for BUPA members but we would urge you to speak to BUPA direct regarding this latest decision. We can only make you aware that Mr O’Leary’s surgery fees remain unchanged from the estimate of costs we send to all patients prior to embarking on surgery. His surgery fees have not changed for at least 6 years.
** PLEASE NOTE - The new BUPA conditions do not affect outpatient appointments or treatment in the outpatient clinic.
Regards
Reading Knee Unit.
