Sean O'Leary

solearyprofessionalSean underwent basic medical training at Cambridge University and St Mary's Hospital Medical school. After undergoing Orthopaedic Speciality training on the North West Thames programme he completed a Fellowship year in Australia (2000) specialising in knee and shoulder surgery. He has been a Consultant at The Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading since January 2002.

Sport and sports injuries have played a significant role in his life:

Athletics (National schools 400m hurdles)
Basketball (National League - Plymouth Raiders)
Rugby (Wasps 1984-92, Barbarians, England B)
Indoor Rowing (British Indoor Rowing Championship - 4th 1999 & 2005)
Cycling (On and off road)

He now specialises on all aspects of knee surgery including arthroscopic treatments, ligament reconstruction and partial / total joint replacement. Given his background he has a keen interest in sports knee injuries and their management. The facilities at Dunedin hospital allow X-ray, MRI, physiotherapy and brace fitting to be done on site, often the same day if there is an urgent need.

He is particularly interested in the 'young' arthritic knee and the evolving joint preserving techniques to manage such patients. He is also interested in the outcome of all major surgical procedures and has established databases of proven outcome scores. The results of this work is presented in the 'Outcomes of Surgery' section and in the various patient information booklets which have been written for all procedures. These scores allow comparison to established national standards - where they exist - and also illustrate the time and pattern of recovery certain interventions may follow.
